Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This course is designed to give structured support to students undertaking final year projects in Public Administration and to enable them to produce an extended piece of writing which demonstrates the ability to collect, synthesise, interpret and present data.

Syllabus:

What is research? Research Methods; Research Techniques; carrying out a literature review; accessing data; selecting data; analysing and presenting data.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module students should have: An understanding of techniques of research and enquiry and their application to the study of politics and public administration knowledge of the main research paradigms the ability to gather, organise and deploy evidence and information from a range of different sources the skill to analyse and synthesise a wide range of material in verbal and numerical formats the capacity to identify and review literature relevant to their chosen topic.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module students should: Show critical reflection/thinking capacity recognise the need to take account of ethical issues when conducting research using human subjects.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module students should: Display effective use of appropriate research tools

The module uses a combination of lectures, participative workshops and self-directed learning.
